Excellence — a formidable challenger. | by The Sports and Fitness Network.

What does it take to achieve excellence? ‘It takes what it takes.’ These are the words of wisdom from Rose Magers-Powell, a former Olympian and head volleyball coach at Alabama A&M University — a true authority in the world of volleyball.

Excellence is not a random occurrence but a deliberate act of will — mental strength and self-discipline. You must intentionally enact your willpower to achieve excellence in sports or any endeavor. In an insightful conversation I recently had with Rose, she generously shared a treasure trove of wisdom on this topic and I am delighted to pass on this invaluable knowledge to you.

“Once you get to college, and at the professional level, everyone is a star — it’s how they got there,” Rose attests. To truly shine and stand out, you must tirelessly invest in hard work and dedication over and beyond expectations. Rose’s illustrious career as an Olympian and professional volleyball player owes much of her success to these very principles. She expressed that this is why she admires the talent and story of Michael Jordan, her favorite athlete.

The formula to excellence, according to Rose, revolves around a few fundamental tenets:

  • Self-Discipline: Mastering the art of self-control and maintaining a disciplined approach is the foundation of greatness. Too often, we say what we can’t do when we have this attainable quality that we can will in our lives that carry us to excellence.
  • Relentless Effort: Going above and beyond what is expected and working harder than your competition is non-negotiable and irrefutably necessary — there are no mediocre champions.
  • Taking the initiative: A proactive attitude towards learning and improvement is essential to excellence. Learn every position in the game; it makes you invaluable to your team.
  • Active Listening: The ability to absorb knowledge and wisdom from others must be a characteristic of those who aspire to be the best. Listen, apply, repeat. These are building blocks to understanding.
  • Be Intentional: Approach competition with an expected end. This is your blueprint to success.

By embodying these few principles, one can ascend to the ranks of excellence and be recognized as a formidable challenger. Such individuals have the remarkable ability to instill fear, admiration, and even self-doubt into the minds of the greatest champions.
